Message from the President Welcome
to 2020 with the Trust’s first eNews of the year. It’s been an
eventful holiday period, what with the water restrictions and the
bushfires. I suspect all residents of 2119 have been affected in
some way by the drought and by the recent bushfires. I can’t
remember seeing Beecroft and Cheltenham so dry. Because of the
recent bushfires I have purposely avoided contacting our State Member
for Epping and NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet over the holiday
period. But I will raise with him local matters that are still
outstanding from last year, including the possibility of retaining the
pedestrian ramp at Beecroft Station and the amelioration of traffic
noise along the M2.
The Trust was notified late last December that we had been unsuccessful
with our application for a Federal grant to repair the Beecroft War
Memorial. Bear in mind though, the Trust as a community
organisation was simply the applicant on behalf of Hornsby Council, who
prepared the detailed submission.
On a sadder note, well known Cheltenham resident Diana Winch passed away on 27th
December 2019. Diana and her husband Gordon were both committee
members about 20 years ago. The Trust offers our condolences
to Gordon and the extended family.
Latest on Seniors Housing in Beecroft and Cheltenham The
proposed seniors housing development adjacent to Cheltenham Station, 14
– 18 Sutherland Road, was approved by the Land and Environment Court
(LEC) before Christmas. The judgement can be read by CLICKING HERE

This development also went to the LEC. The original design
included the demolition of the two dwellings facing Malton Road.
The community would have preferred a refusal but was able, with strong
support from the local community and input from Hornsby Council, to
retain the two dwellings and achieve a better outcome. It’s nice
that the developer has erected a small plaque in the front garden (see
photograph) outlining the heritage significance of the two retained
dwellings we fought so hard to save, but I will let you the reader judge
the merit of the additional wording.
The seniors housing development in Cardinal Avenue that was approved by
the former Hornsby Council is nearing completion. The large
seniors development in Copeland Road, approved by the local planning
panel, has now commenced construction.

Street sweeping the leaves Street
sweeping – With the recent dry weather and the concerns about
bushfires, many of our trees are defoliating as a natural mechanism to
survive. Hornsby Council is attempting to sweep as many streets as
possible. If you believe your street has been missed or your
street has a particularly large amount of leaf litter there is a Waste
hotline 9847 4856 you can ring.
The former haulage road behind Cheltenham Oval and netball courts The
Trust has been assisting Hornsby Council by regularly monitoring the
regeneration of the bushland along the former haulage road between
Cheltenham Oval and Kirkham St. Our State Member for Epping and
Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has also been kept informed. While the
native seedlings are growing, the frequent water leaks from the
temporary irrigation system managed by the landscape contractor have
been concerning, especially during our current water restrictions.
The Trust understands the contract issued by the Metro project does not,
surprisingly, include weeding. Nor does the contract include the
lower batter adjacent to the M2 noise wall where there is extensive weed
growth plus remnant material left behind by the Metro
construction. The Trust would like to see the State government
hand the responsibility of managing the project over to Council who are
experienced in managing bush regeneration projects. The Trust
understands that Council supports this initiative. In the interest
of the efficient use of government funds the Trust will continue to
assist Council by lobbying our local State Member to achieve this
preferred outcome.

Sunday morning 1st March 2020 The
Trust has again registered the Beecroft Village Green as an official
site. The Trust will set up at the BVG BBQ area for registration
between 9am and Noon. Bags will be available. Please wear
outdoor clothes and shoes, hat and garden gloves. Many of the
items that need to be picked up will be dirty. All welcome

Tuesday 31st March 2020 The Beecroft Bowling Club has been booked for Tuesday night 31st March 2020 for the Trust’s AGM. Please note the date in your diary/calendar.
